SOBRIETY It is important to understand that achieving sobriety and living a sober life is not achieved alone. One example is a client who had some serious legal problems caused by alcohol. He served some jail time and the court required him to complete a course of once-a-week therapy. Together we struggled with his alcohol use. He would drink then stop then drink again, repeating the cycle of behavior. He was angry and disappointed. Finally, during an alcohol-fueled blackout, he acted out in a rage, verbally assaulting a friend. The next day he quit drinking and it's been over a year since he has had a drink. Patience and perseverance on both our parts paid off. He is grateful for the support and so is his family. I am proud of the effort he has made to maintain sobriety. Imagine you are in a boat adrift at sea. You are tossing and turning in the waves, out of control. You are thrown onto the shore of an uncharted land. You are lost. You are frightened and overwhelmed. You struggle up onto the sand and, standing in the shade of a tree, is a stranger who extends a hand. That's me. I'm your guide. I've been waiting and I know the territory. I know where the obstacles lay and where the lions and tigers are hiding. Let me be your guide. New sobriety is like new skin and new feelings. New and strange. Life doesn't always behave the way we think it should nor do people, jobs and more. Don't try to work out these new situations with the old tools. Please call me. Let's talk about it. |
